Scope and use
What is Nerivio®?
Nerivio® is an innovative, non-drug self-treatment option for people with migraines. Those affected can use the prescription medical device to reduce pain during an acute migraine attack or as a preventive measure every other day to reduce the number of migraine days. The non-invasive method is based on so-called Remote Electrical Neuromodulation, or REN for short. The wireless bracelet is attached to the upper arm for each 45-minute treatment sequence. It is controlled via an app and activates the body's own pain control system using small electrical impulses.
Who is Nerivio® suitable for?
Nerivio® is suitable for both acute and preventative self-treatment of migraines with and without aura from the age of 12.
People with uncontrolled epilepsy or an active implanted medical device, such as a pacemaker, hearing implant, or other implanted electronic device, should not use Nerivio® .
Is Nerivio® suitable for people with chronic migraines?
Yes. Nerivio® is a prescription-only, self-administered device for the treatment of migraines. It is suitable for the treatment of episodic and chronic migraine with or without aura in patients aged 12 years and over. To prevent migraines, you can use the device every other day.
How is Nerivio® used?
The neuromodulation band should only be used on the upper arm on dry, healthy skin. Do not use Nerivio® on numb skin areas, over metal implants or near tissue damage.
When should Nerivio® be used?
You can use Nerivio® for both acute and preventive treatment of migraines.
Acute treatment of a migraine attack:
Use Nerivio® as often as necessary to treat migraine attacks. For best treatment results, start treatment as early as possible, within the first 60 minutes of the onset of migraine symptoms. With the help of the headache diary integrated in the Nerivio® app, you can get to know your migraine better and start treatment if you notice early signs of migraine.
Treatment to prevent migraines:
To prevent migraines, treatment should be carried out every other day. The time of day doesn't matter. The most important thing is that you choose a time that is convenient for you and stick to it. The Nerivio® app offers a reminder function for your preventative treatments so that you don't miss any treatment.
Combination of acute treatment and prevention:
Nerivio® can be used to prevent migraines and for the acute treatment of migraine attacks. The recommendation is to use the device every other day for preventive treatment and at the beginning of a migraine attack. The earlier you start treatment in the event of an acute attack, the better the results will be.
Example of a combination of acute treatment and preventive treatment:
You decide to have preventive treatment every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
Do you have a migraine attack on one of the days when you did not plan preventive treatment (e.g. on Sunday)? Then carry out a 45-minute Nerivio® treatment right at the start of the first symptoms . Then continue your preventive treatment as usual on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
Do you have a migraine attack on one of the days when you have already planned preventive treatment (e.g. on Monday)? Then either carry out acute treatment and prevention at the same time in one session or (if you have already finished the preventative treatment) carry out another Nerivio® treatment on that day. The number of daily Nerivio® treatments is not limited. In any case, continue your preventive treatment as usual on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday of this week.
Can I use Nerivio® even though my migraine started over an hour ago?
You can use Nerivio® to treat your migraines at any time for acute treatment . Nerivio® clinical data shows that the neuromodulation band is more effective when used at the onset of symptoms. Therefore, it is recommended to start treatment as early as possible and within 60 minutes of the onset of the aura or migraine headache.
If the headache has not been relieved after one treatment session or occurs again, you can also use Nerivio® for several treatments in one day.
On which arm should I use Nerivio®?
You can use Nerivio® on both arms, regardless of which side the headache occurs.
Use Nerivio® on the outer side of your upper arm. Please also read the instructions.
Treatment
How many treatments can I do with Nerivio®?
The device is designed for 18, 45-minute treatments. When not in use, the electrodes should be covered with the protective film provided and the device should be stored in its original packaging or in the associated case. Every fourth treatment, gently rub a drop or two of water onto the gel surface of the electrodes with your finger to maintain their adhesion.
How intensely should I treat my migraine headaches?
Adjust the treatment intensity so that it is strong but comfortable and painless. This is crucial for clinical benefit. The intensity can be regulated via the app using the plus and minus buttons. Continuously pressing the plus button results in a gradual increase in intensity. Set the intensity level at the start of the treatment and maintain it throughout the entire 45-minute treatment unless it is too high and uncomfortable. Please note: The stimulation can initially be perceived as very intense, but after that you get used to it and it usually becomes more pleasant. There is no need to increase the intensity during use.
How does the treatment feel?
Nerivio® sends out electrical impulses. You may feel an intense sensation at first, but this usually subsides to a comfortable level after a few seconds. If the feeling is uncomfortable or painful, you should reduce the intensity. During treatment you may experience a temporary feeling of warmth, local tingling, numbness in the arm, pain in the arm or redness of the skin, which disappear shortly after the treatment ends. If you notice hand numbness and/or muscle twitching, try changing the position of the device on your arm. Ideally, place Nerivio® on the outside of your upper arm between the front and back muscles (biceps and triceps).
The stimulation is not noticeable. What should I do?
Make sure that the protective film has been removed from the electrodes (point of contact with the skin), that the device and the app are connected and that the treatment has started and has not been stopped or paused. Adjust the intensity of the treatment so that it feels strong, yet comfortable and pain-free by pressing the plus button in the app. If stimulation is still not felt, the electrodes may be losing their adhesion. In this case, turn off the device and use your finger to gently rub a drop or two of water onto the gel surface of the electrodes to restore their adhesion. If the adhesive surface of the electrodes is damaged, you should replace the device.
Can I carry out treatments without an internet connection?
Yes. Treatments with Nerivio® can be carried out without an internet connection and do not require WiFi or mobile data. An internet connection is only required when registering or logging into the app. If you close the app without logging out, you won't need an internet connection to log in again next time.
Can I connect multiple Nervio® devices to the same user account?
Yes. The Nerivio® app supports multiple devices used by the same user. For example, you can use one device at home and another at your workplace. This is how it's done:
- Connect your first device to the app.
- If you would like to connect a second device to the same user account in the app, click on the “Connect” button. Make sure only one of your devices is turned on and that no treatment is in progress.
Please note that using the same device with different user accounts is not possible. Never carry out a treatment with two devices on your body at the same time.
Has the effectiveness of the method been proven?
Yes. The approval study for the acute treatment of migraines with Nerivio® shows that 67% of those affected achieve pain relief two hours after treatment with Nerivio® . 37% of those affected were pain-free two hours after treatment. In a study on the preventative treatment of migraines, participants with chronic migraines were able to reduce the average number of monthly migraine days by 4.7 days. The application took place every other day for a period of two months.
Nerivio® in combination with other migraine therapies
Can Nerivio® be used with migraine medications? What should you take into account?
One of the advantages of the neuromodulation band is that you can use it in addition to your current migraine medication therapy. We recommend that you work with your doctor to develop a routine that is suitable for you. Do not use Nerivio® with another electronic stimulation device or when wearing an implanted medical device, such as: B. a pacemaker.

How can I turn off Nerivio® ?
Nerivio® switches off automatically and has the following shutdown functions:
- When you turn on the device for the first time to pair and set it up, it will automatically turn off after ten minutes
- For all subsequent treatments, the device gives you three minutes to start the treatment and then switches off if it is not started
- If you pause Nerivio® during a treatment, it will automatically switch off after five minutes if the treatment is not resumed. Up to three treatment breaks can be taken per treatment
- At the end of a treatment, the device switches off automatically after one minute.
What is the bracelet for and how do I use it?
The bracelet improves the contact between the device and your skin. When using it for the first time, you must adjust the bracelet to your size. You can choose between four sizes (S, M, L, XL). Use the extension for sizes L and XL.
Does Nerivio® contain latex?
No. None of the materials used contain latex.
How does Nerivio® work?
The active principle of Nerivio® is Remote Electrical Neurostimulation (REN). The nerve endings in the upper arm are stimulated by painless electrical impulses. This stimulation triggers a natural pain-relieving process in the brainstem and thus activates the body's own pain control mechanisms.
The REN method should not be confused with Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS). The two methods work with different mechanisms of action, different electrical impulses, other nerve fibers and other stimulation sites. The TENS method is intended to block local pain fibers using electrical impulses and must therefore be applied to the location of the pain - the forehead. The big advantage of REN is, among other things, the inconspicuous application on the upper arm. The effectiveness and tolerability of REN has been proven in an extensive study program for both acute treatment and migraine prophylaxis. It has also been shown that those affected with episodic and chronic migraines with or without aura benefit from the application.
